Vault

This work was commissioned by virtuoso Swiss Euphonium Soloist, Fabian Bloch for his trio (euphonium, piano and drums) alongside seven other pieces from contemporary composers and was recorded on his album, Spot On! - The Next Generation of Euphonium Music, which was released in November of 2019. The CD and subsequent concert tour were well received by audiences and critics alike. As the title suggests music of the melodic material in this jazz influenced work requires the euphonium soloist to traverse wider and wider intervals. The opening slow section explores some of the extremes of range, whilst still expecting the soloist to retain the sonorous sound the euphonium is known for. The later section is more rhythmic with a 7/4 and 13/8 feel, inspired by the music of composers such as Bob Brookmeyer and Hank levy. Featuring shifting meters, intervalic melodies and with plenty of opportunity for the drummer to groove, Vault is a workout for all the performers.
